To date, cyanoacrylate glue (like Glubran Tiss 2) is used for the sealing/fixation of long-term venous catheters (PICC, CIC, CVC, Midline etc…) but it is not yet widespread the use in arterial catheterization. This is a shorter catheterization, but the use of glue seems to be of great interest). We perceived a lot of interest for the possible use in arterial catheterization during the last Gavecelt/Picc Day congress in Florence (Italy).
In literature there are some publications on this topic and further studies will be needed.
Arterial catheterization means the introduction of a cannula or a catheter into a palpable artery (with the exception of the carotid artery).
Arterial catheterization allows the continuous measurement of arterial pressure (systolic, average and diastolic) and of rapidly withdrawing blood samples for blood gas analysis. This procedure is performed in patients admitted to intensive, sub-intensive departments and patients in the operating room.
The main indications are:
• blood gas flow control in subjects with respiratory failure undergoing artificial ventilation
• haemodynamic control in patients undergoing cardiovascular pharmacological therapy, to quickly evaluate its effects
• invasive hemodynamic control during and after the execution of complex surgical procedures, or in haemodynamically unstable subjects
• determination of cardiac output (pressure wave analysis, PiCCO system)
